In the aftermath of the recent APC primaries, particularly in Ogun State, and the controversies and dissatisfaction that followed, two of the state’s most prominent political figures—Senator Ibikunle Amosun and Senator Gbenga Daniel—have remained notably silent.

Their continued silence has attracted considerable attention, especially given the widespread perception that both leaders are aligned with and supportive of Senator Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi)’s governorship aspiration. Considering their political influence, extensive grassroots networks, and longstanding presence in the state’s political landscape, many party members and observers anticipated a more visible and reassuring level of engagement from them at this critical juncture.

Political success is often shaped not only by the strength of candidates but also by the active involvement of influential stakeholders. Comparing emerging political actors with established figures such as Amosun and Daniel may underestimate the enduring roles these leaders continue to play within the APC in Ogun State. Their experience, organizational capacity, and electoral relevance remain significant strategic assets. Any perception that their contributions are no longer essential could pose challenges for the party as it prepares for the forthcoming elections. The political structure associated with Senator Adeola and its demonstrated strength would likely benefit from broader collaboration and alignment with other key stakeholders, promoting unity and cohesion across both state and National Assembly levels.

In politics, silence can often communicate as powerfully as public statements.

Political history provides valuable lessons. Periods characterized by complacency and strategic miscalculations have, in the past, contributed to the erosion of political dominance, including the decline of the PDP in Ogun State. Those familiar with that era understand the consequences of underestimating influential political actors and failing to maintain internal cohesion. The effects extended beyond the state and carried implications for the broader national political landscape. Failure to effectively address internal concerns and preserve party unity could once again result in significant political consequences.

The situation has become even more significant with the emergence of new political interests and alliances. Political stakeholders across the state are closely observing developments, particularly following Iyabo Obasanjo’s decision to become actively involved in the political process. Her participation has introduced an additional dimension to an already evolving political environment.

At this stage, it is essential for the party leadership to adopt a deliberate and strategic approach. Clear decisions are required regarding reconciliation efforts, stakeholder engagement, and the preservation of party unity. Equally important is the need to provide adequate time and opportunity to address grievances, rebuild confidence, and effectively manage any fallout from the primaries ahead of the general elections.

The stakes remain exceptionally high. Ogun State is strategically important, not only in the context of the governorship election but also with respect to the party’s broader electoral objectives, including the presidential election. The silence of influential political actors, if not properly addressed, may be interpreted in various ways by party members and the electorate.

In politics, silence can often communicate as powerfully as public statements. The APC leadership must therefore act proactively to ensure that the silence of its most influential stakeholders does not evolve into a source of uncertainty as the elections approach.
