Police Command in Borno has impounded 78 vehicles for operating without registration number plates.

The announcement is contained in a statement issued on Thursday in Maiduguri by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso.

According to the statement, the enforcement exercise which commenced on June 10, 2026, targets vehicles operating without registration number plates as well as those with concealed, altered, defaced, or obscured number plates.

“The initiative is in compliance with a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu,” it said

It stated that all owners and operators of the impounded vehicles had been processed while relevant cases had been charged before competent courts in accordance with extant laws.

According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, described the exercise as a proactive crime-prevention measure designed to enhance public safety.

The measure, it was said, would improve intelligence gathering, and prevent criminals from exploiting unregistered vehicles for unlawful activities.

It emphasised that the operation was not intended to inconvenience law-abiding citizens but to promote adherence to existing traffic and security regulations.

The statement urged vehicle owners to regularise their registrations and ensure approved number plates were properly displayed.

It assured residents that the enforcement would continue professionally and fairly while reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property across Borno.
