Former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar (Rtd), has died in captivity two weeks after he was abducted by bandits.
He was abducted along with his wife in Katsina State.
His death was confirmed on Saturday in a statement on Saturday by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasiru Mu’azu.
The government described the death of Major General Rabe Abubakar (Rtd) as a tragic loss to the state and the nation.
The retired military officer was said to have died as a result of complications that arose from diabetes and hypertension while in captivity.
According to Mu’azu, his death came despite the efforts by the state government and security agencies to secure his release.
The statement reads in part: “It is with profound sadness that we confirm the death of retired Maj,-Gen. Rabe Abubakar while in bandits’ captivity.
“Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the state government and security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy.”
The commissioner conveyed the condolence message of Governor Dikko Radda to the family of the deceased and Nigerians in general.
The death, Radda was quoted as saying, marked the urgent need to nip in the bud, the criminal activities threatening the peace of the nation.
The commissioner said, “The governor extends his deepest condolences to the family of the late general and the nation.
“He described the incident as a dark moment and a reminder of the need for collective action in tackling the menace of banditry and other security challenges.”
