A call has been made for the promotion of Nigerian culture and values in order to enhance sound morals, peaceful coexistence, orderliness and good health among students and children in general in the country.

The call was made by the Principal of FESTAC Senior Grammar School, Lagos, Mrs. Funsho Bolawole, at the maiden edition of the Cultural/Speech and Prize Giving Day of the school.

The event which was held on December 5, 2025, at the school premises was, according to Bolawole, designed to remind the students of their roots and appreciate excellence.

The principal said it was unfortunate that western culture had robbed Nigerians of their culture and values in different areas.

Her words: “With the trending western culture, many of us have lost sight of our roots, our foundations and our values, all in the name of civilization.

“Our natural healthy meals have been replaced with chemicals that are destroying our health. When we need medication, we further swallow more chemicals that pamper us to death.”

She added: “The consequences are fatal. There is chaos everywhere, no fear of elders, disrespectful youths are all over the place, and going against parents, and going into criminal activities. Values are lost, everyone wants to get rich quick. Many can’t speak their local languages; they don’t know where crops are produced.”

She said it was the need to promote Nigerian culture and values among students that prompted the management of the school’s resolve to organize the event.

The event witnessed display of Nigerian dresses as represented by the Yoruba, the Hausa, Urhobo, Fulani, Igbo, Tiv and many more tribes.

The event also featured cultural dances while an African Table was set with 11 different local dishes.

Local snacks from the different parts of the country were also served.

The event also served as an opportunity to show appreciation to the former Customs Area Controller, Lagos Industrial Area Command, located in FESTAC Town, Sarah Mamsa Wadinda (rtd) who was said to have, at different times, supported the school.

Wadinda’s generosity, Bolawole said, had fetched the school a water treatment plant; 16 computers each with UPS and industrial photocopier/printer.

Wadinda was said to have, in addition, carried out the renovation of all staff’s and students’ toilets, upgraded the healing bay to a clinic and painted most parts of the school among other things.

Also at the event, with the initiative of Mr Fred Obasi, the president of the 1985 set of the Old Students’ Association, the Ideal Sports Club, award plagues and a minimum of N10,000 cash gift to nine outstanding students.

The Great Mates Lounge, GML, Ladies, also donated over 100 school bags, sandals, mathematical sets, socks and sanitary pads for girls.

Dignitaries present included the Tutor General/Permanent Secretary of Education District V, Mr Dauda Abiodun Hassan, Deputy Controller General, D.C. Kawuyo; the Public Relations Officer, Madam J.D. Tomo; the chairman of the Parents’ Forum, Mr Beniah Mbakwe; Mrs Vera Ogbebo Samuel and Tahir Momoh.
