The Progressive Impact Organization for Community Development, PRIMORG, and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have issued a stern warning to Nigerians, particularly students and youth, about the dangers of drug abuse.

This warning was handed down to senior and junior secondary students at Glorylanders International School in Kubwa, FCT, during a Safe Without Drugs, SWiD, Initiative Campaign organized by PRIMORG on Friday, October 31, 2025.

PRIMORG aims to promote drug demand reduction in collaboration with the NDLEA through this project.

Speaking at the sensitization programme, PRIMORG’s Executive Director, Okhiria Agbonsuremi, raised concerns about the potential impact of drug use, warning students that their life ambitions could be significantly hindered if they do not avoid drugs and the abuse of psychoactive substances.

Agbonsuremi expressed regret that young people constitute a significant portion of the approximately 14 million individuals who are struggling with illicit drug use.

He emphasized that the purpose of the outreach was to encourage students and young people across the country to abstain from drug abuse.

“Let it be clear to you all that drugs will derail your ambitions and prevent you from achieving what you want in the future. With drug abuse, you will not amount to anything in society. We urge you to heed this warning against drugs and substance abuse,” he stressed.

“If you aspire to become a lawyer, medical doctor, lawmaker, or even president, you need to stay away from illicit drugs. This is why we (PRIMORG and NDLEA) took the time to come and warn you all,” Agbonsuremi concluded.

He added, “We believe it is essential to inform you about the dangers of substance abuse while you are still young. Consider yourselves privileged to receive this life-saving information, and we encourage you to share this message with your parents, guardians, and relatives: drug abuse destroys your future.”

Agbonsuremi also expressed gratitude to the NDLEA and PRIMORG staff for their collaboration in delivering the important message and thanked the management of Glorylanders International School, Kubwa, FCT, for providing the opportunity to speak to the students.

Echoing this sentiment, NDLEA’s Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics, Presley Iwunze, elaborated on the consequences of abusing drugs or psychoactive substances.

He cautioned students that drug abuse did not enhance one’s intelligence or abilities; instead, it threatens to ruin their bright futures.

Iwunze emphasized the severe dangers associated with substance abuse, noting that it could lead to brain damage, weaken immune systems, heart and kidney diseases, mental disorders, social rejection, and loss of concentration in school, among other serious health issues.

He encouraged students to have confidence and resilience when faced with peer pressure to try drugs and to avoid parties where substance abuse might occur. Iwunze advised that those who want to stay away from drugs should choose good friends and engage in productive activities.

“The hard truth is that drugs do not make you feel stronger or smarter. They do not make you a better student; they only destroy your future. You will develop an addiction, and your situation will deteriorate—so do not even consider trying drugs or psychoactive substances,” Iwunze warned.

In her remarks, the school’s proprietress, Mrs. Oluwakemi Ajagbe, praised PRIMORG and NDLEA’s efforts to promote a better society by reducing drug abuse to a minimum and is committed to building on the awareness created.

PRIMORG had previously conducted anti-drug awareness and sensitization campaigns in five public and private schools in the Federal Capital Territory, including Excellent Kiddies Academy, Bwari; Government Secondary School Apo; Government Secondary School Kabusa; Goshen Montessori, Kubwa; and Government Secondary School, Kubwa.
