Senate confirms Amupitan as new INEC chairman

The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The confirmation was made on Thursday after the screening carried out by the legislators at plenary.

With the confirmation, he succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

Among other things, the new INEC boss was asked questions on he would restore credibility to the body and carry out reforms.

Speaking during the screening, Amupitan promised to improve the electoral system by working with all relevant agencies like the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC.

58 years old, Amupitan is from Kogi State.

A legal luminary, he was the deputy vice-chancellor (Administration) at University of Jos.
