President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered a crackdown on security agents found to be involved in the release of 295 smuggled petroleum tankers without due authorization.

The release was reported to have been carried out on December 17, 2019 by some security officials charged with the responsibility of protecting Nigerian borders.

The crackdown was recommended by the board of inquiry set up by the National Security Adviser to investigate the crime.

It was recommended that all officials (civilian or security operatives) found to have connived to undermine government’s efforts should be withdrawn from the border drill and severely sanctioned by their respective organizations.

The president who accepted the recommendations of the board directed the immediate withdrawal and replacement of all those found culpable of involvement in the release of the tankers.

He also directed that their respective organisations should mete immediate appropriate disciplinary actions to them.
